Where to See the Northern Lights

Best Latitudes

The northern lights (aurora borealis) are most frequent and vivid at high northern latitudes—the auroral oval typically lies over Alaska, northern Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. During geomagnetic storms (Kp 5+), the oval expands and aurora can be seen in northern US, UK, Ireland, and central Europe. The higher the Kp, the farther south aurora may appear.

Conditions

Dark, clear skies and minimal light pollution are best. Winter (long nights) at high latitudes offers more dark hours. Solar cycle: more storms and aurora near solar maximum. Check space weather and Kp forecasts (e.g. NOAA SWPC, AuroraWatch UK); Cosmic Radar shows the daily Kp and aurora outlook in the report so you can plan viewing when activity is elevated.
